The boy needs a decent tail

Now he's a rabbit

This is a rabbit tail--a la washcloth.

Noah has been pretending so much these days. SO MUCH. Like, all day long. As in, I need to tell him it's time to just be Noah and eat his dinner with a fork, instead of cat-style with his face in the bowl. I did let him eat his lunch that way, so I wasn't a total party-pooper.

Anyway...back to tails. His choice of make-believe these days is animals. He pretends to be all kinds of animals--cats, rabbits, eagles, chickens, owls, turtles, sloths, lizards, cougars...ect. He is really interested in what kind of tails all these animals have. So, we get on the internet and look up images of whatever it is that is capturing his interest at the moment. And I do mean moment. It can change from minute to minute. Do you know how many times I have been on the Internet already this morning? um, yeah. I will say this, major learning is going on as he asks all kinds of questions about the animals. What do they eat? Where do they live? Do they lay eggs? And of course...what kind of tail do they have?

Pretending to be a cat

Here he is pretending to be a cat. That's a distowel hanging out the back of shorts. He loves using the dishtowels. He actually has never complained, or asked for anything more realistic. In his mind that dishtowel is whatever tail he wants it to be. I love that. But I thought it would be fun to surprise him with some "tails". Nothing fancy. I have some ideas brewing, I'll show you when they materialize. (ha! funny pun)

I have been staying up past my bedtime trying to get my shop update ready for tomorrow. I think I can reach that goal. Mark is out of town for a few days, so there goes my extra help. But I'm going to try, in between researching animal tails with Noah.

What fun! Especially the eating-lunch-like-a-cat part. By now you've probably come across What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page, but it sounds perfect for you and Noah right now--lots of interesting facts (and beautiful collage art) about animal parts. Can't wait to see the tails!

Well....Noah is adorable as always. Love the imaginary games......

But what got me is the size of the real cat!! Wow. It makes Noah look so small in that picture. I gotta ask how much the cat weighs??

THAT CAT IS HUGE!!!!

yes! the angle of that shot. the cat looks bigger than noah, and of course, that can't be true, or we'd have seen all of you on "that's the biggest cat ever" news feature on the today show.

I was wondering about the cat, too! :)

so fun, and easy, to change personality when you are a kiddo! I remember being a troll and making a loooong yarn tail when I was a kid.

FUN - I think Bea would have fun playing with him right now. She isn't usually the animal herself now but LOVES to make up stories with /about animals... If you make the tails he'll probably still use the dishtowel - if he's anything like my daughter... :-)

I think the cat is bigger than Noah! lol!
My son, Ethan, went through a tail phase. This was before I had much time for sewing and Claire was a baby, so my mom made him so many different tails!

I think the sword phase comes next! lol!
(But...if Noah is like Ethan, you'll still be doing the research...he'll have to know all about the types of metal they are made from, where the metal comes from, how they mold it, what kind of case to keep it in...lol! I think it's more about the process than the sword.) My mom also made him a sword with the thing around his waist to hold it and pull it out really fast. lol!
