and now, a word from our sponser
i'll just be up front with you right away...the title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with it's content. it's just random, like this post will be.
recent thrift store finds....
when i first saw this basket, it was one of those long, contemplative moments...do i like it? na. well, maybe. nope, it's too country. but wait, it is kinda cute. i don't know about those apples though....that's how the conversation in my mind went. I left the store without it. a couple days later i went back and bought it. i'm glad i did--it has grown on me. since i sew at the kitchen table, i needed something to contain all my stuff. that's its job, and it does it very well. (the painting in the background is also a thrift find, but from a couple of years ago)
that same day i scored a pile of old martha stewarts'...always happy to come across these.
i know i'm not the only one, but spring is definitely planting its loveliness in my mind these days. i need to give my living-room a make-over, just in a small way. new pillows, break out the white slipcovers. maybe a furniture re-shuffle. i also really want to freshen up my kitchen with some new floor mats, curtains, and a couple of new potholders. do your potholders get totally gross looking? gee-whiz, mine are horrible. so anyway, this new pile of fabric is supposed to start me on my way to a new and improved kitchen and some fresh pillows for the living-room.
after mulling over what colors to go with--thinking i might try something new--i went with my old standards--pinks, greens, and browns.
today was library day. we *love* the library.
and i support mine very well with paying over due fines. i won't even tell you what i paid once in fines--i'll just say that i think i broke a record. seriously. i was super embarrassed. super-duper. even so, what would we do without libraries? they are such a great invention.
this is a comment noah just said to me--talk about random.
n- mom, did you just have some tea?
me- yes.
n- good. i don't want you to get all crazy today.
honestly folks, i really dont get all crazy if i don't have my tea!
and now, we return to our regular scheduled programing.

Don't you love those conversations?

"All crazy". I love it!
Those magazines are a great score.

Ooooh-ahhhh! Thrifting is my favorite past time. :) I love the goodies you got! I'm on the search for old Marthas, but sadly it must not be meant for me... I can never find them. lol!

when i finished my grad degree in library science, they held my diploma because i owed the university library $35 in late fees...

I love the basket but, like you, am undecided about the apples. Meg's comment about her diploma being held in hostage for library fees makes me laugh. I've been equally guilty here and there about owing libary late fees.

My husband makes fun of me because a)I am always putting books on hold at the library and then asking him to pick them up for me and b)I often have to give him money for my fines when he does go and pick those books up. I tell him that because we use the library so much (books, cds, dvds all the time!) that I don't mind because we are supporting them to keep them around!
And that comment by Meg really made me laugh out loud.

I love the fabric choices...definitely the greens are my favorite with a little pink in it!
We are library crazed people as well and soo enjoy going that I typically ahead of time request my books at home days inadvance so they are ready for me when I get there and we can just browse.

I love a bit of randomness!Tell Noah I think he might be right about the tea.My girls know not to ask me anything before I'm at least half through my morning cuppa. In fact Lily brings it to me in bed now just to safe!!

Boy does that bring back memories. We actually stopped going to the library because I couldn't seem to get back there on time. When they got older I just started buying books. I felt like it was cheaper and I got to keep something for my money. The libraries are a great source for research and I found myself there once again with my daughter this year. She went ahead and got a new card and was excited because now she can do research on the internet with some program called Galileo. Anyway thanks for sparking my memories of my children when they were little and sweet and the library was where they wanted to be.

Can you beat $90? Yikes! Beautiful fabrics!
Great find on the old magazines. I just came across a bunch too. :)

nice to meet you...love your blog...I love visiting the main LA library and wonder through the books, and I have definitely paid my share of really high fines...
Posted by: cutpaperflowers | February 07, 2007 at 08:24 AM
Ahaha!
And yeah... I think I support the library single-handedly with my overdue fines. Why don't I just BUY the books already?!!
Posted by: Amy | February 07, 2007 at 08:35 AM
I am so glad to know I am not the only one supporting the library with great fines! Now they even send you to collections if you don't pay up in a timely matter. I can't top 90 - but I will be dropping about 60 bucks at the circulation desk later today. Ya - coulda bought the books and then some with that!
I love those colors together!

I'm compulsive about returning library books on time, but I'm totally with you on the gross potholders thing. And oven mitts? Ugh. Don't even get me started. For Valentine's Day this year, I'm making my husband some new ones, and am *throwing away* the disgusting ones he uses before he can slip them in the washing machine one. more. time.

well, *i* do get all crazy if i don't get my proper beverages in me :-)

My biggest fine (so far) was $124.68. I had left some things undone when I moved away and when I moved back I had to pay the fine in installments so I could get a library card!

I'm so glad to know that I am not the only one that has had a hefty fine (or 2) at the local library. I make it so much worse for myself, too. Once the books are a little late, I get embarassed and then hang on to them way too long just racking up even bigger fines. Ugh.
I've got to get over there today. I've got some really over due books again. Thanks for the reminder!

Have you tried silicone pot holders? They're great, indestructable, and you can wash them with the dishes.
Our library sends you an email 2 days before your items are due back and then you can renew them on line of you need to. I love it!

I had one of those $35 fines, but it was after a hurricane, so I felt like it should've been forgiven!
Posted by: mj | February 07, 2007 at 05:12 PM
It is so reassuring to know that I am not the only one with crazy late fines from the library! My husband made the comment once that he wished people could buy us gift cards to the library, just to help us pay all our fees!

Oh, your Noah is a sweet, funny one! Library day...I love library days too. And try not to be too over due LOL! Great thrifty finds! Happy Days! :o)

we love the library here at our house too. I view overdue fees at the library as my way of supporting them as well...usually don't let them go too long though. I was quite relieved yesterday to discover that my books were not 2 weeks overdue (as originally thought)...when you check out 30+ books at a time you don't want to get too late!
your little Noah reminds me so much of my Zach...precious!

Great fabric choices and I think the basket is cute. Glad you went back for it. So often, when I go back - it, whatever it is, is gone.

Are you sure you don't get all crazy if you don't have your tea? Cos I'm pretty sure I do!
Posted by: carolyn | February 08, 2007 at 02:58 PM
I laughed at the Library Fines!!! Yep - been there! I can also relate to the cup of tea....I just love my cup of tea! In fact I'm sitting in front of the computer while everyone else is asleep reading your blog and having a cuppa! Bliss!
